Description
Aqua Survey and Instrument Company, a former partnership that began producing the Aqua Magnetic Locator in Cincinnati, Ohio, around 1956. While the original company’s production has changed ownership over time, it is best known for the “Aqua Locator,” a magnetic dip needle device used for finding ferrous metal objects underground, such as valve boxes and surveyor’s stakes. The name likely includes “North” because the device is used like a compass to find true north, which helps in orienting the user.
This comes with its original case but the strap is gone.  Make sure to check out all the pictures before purchasing.
- Product: The company’s most famous product is the Aqua Magnetic Locator, originally called the “Valve Locating Device”.
 - Function: It is a magnetic dip needle that detects the earth’s magnetic field to locate ferrous metal objects like water meter boxes, manhole covers, and surveyor’s stakes.
 - Name origin: The name “North” is included because a key part of using the device is orienting it to true north by using its internal compass to set a baseline for the survey.
 - History: The original patent was filed in 1954 and granted in 1956 to a partnership that began production in Cincinnati. The vintage and retro versions of the locator are still sought after for their historical significance.

Modern relevance
- The original Aqua Locator is no longer in production by the original company, but the technology is used in modern devices.
 - Aqua Survey Inc, a separate company, offers a range of geophysical survey services and equipment, but it is not the same entity as the original Aqua Survey and Instrument Company.
